This is a completely new event to honour Elizabeth Goudge and is unlike anything I have ever undertaken before; so I have nothing historical to bench mark or work from. To make it happen we have to start somewhere. Following consultation with some of the regular Goudge website contacts, we thought that Henley-On-Thames would make an accessible location close to her Oxfordshire home.
We thought that the event should be informal, enjoyable and informative; and include:~
An Exhibition of letters, Photographs and 1st Editions showing insights into her time in Devon and her final home in Oxfordshire.
Readings and a short talk and discussion on the Importance of Poetry in Elizabeth’s work.
A Discussion on whether or not the time has come to form an Elizabeth Goudge Society formerly affiliated to the Literary Society.
A Trip out to Peppard Common to visit the village she made her home, taking in Pack and Prime Lane, The Dog Inn, Rose Cottage and the Church where Elizabeth worshipped for over thirty years.
Returning to the hotel there will be a chance to freshen up, a question and answer session from the participants and then a screening of "Green Dolphin Country" the film of the book, which made Elizabeth internationally famous in the 1940’s.
Holding it in a public place with access to a wide range of facilities and a private room was a priority. Following some research this led me to selecting The Red Lion in Henley. Unfortunately this requires a fee of £350 for the room plus a per head charge for catering. I have paid for the reservation from my own funds which I hope to recoup by selling tickets for the event. If we could get 25 paying delegates, tickets for the event will be £25.00, to include a welcome coffee and cake and a buffet lunch. So far the response has been good, but there are still tickets available.
The Event will be taking place on Saturday April 25th in The Red Lion, Henley-On-Thames, starting at 10.30 am and finishing late afternoon. Transport out to Peppard Common could be shared between delegates.
I hope that you will be able to support me in setting up this event so that possibly we could take any success forward to a regular or even annual event.
